When you are walking the floor (or directing a camera over Zoom), stop randomly in the finished goods staging area. Point to a single, shrink-wrapped roll of mat and ask the Quality Manager to scan its barcode.
What you are looking for: A true industrial-grade ERP system.
The standard: Within 60 seconds, that barcode should pull up a complete digital genealogy of that specific roll. The system should tell you exactly which glass-drawing furnace the roving came from, the specific batch number of the chemical binder used, the exact time it went through the curing oven, and the name of the machine operator on shift.
If the supplier has to go dig through filing cabinets to find handwritten ledger books, you have a massive problem. If a downstream quality failure happens in your shop, a factory without digital traceability will never be able to isolate the root cause.
2. Look at the Winding Machine (Web Tension Control)

Why does a perfectly good roll of chopped strand mat look like a flattened pancake by the time it reaches your facility 40 days later? The culprit is usually ocean freight vibrations combined with poor winding tension.
What you are looking for: Closed-loop, servo-driven tension control.
The standard: Ask them to show you the very end of the production line where the mat is spooled onto the cardboard core. Budget factories use manual friction plates; the operator literally tightens a bolt to increase tension. This results in rolls that are tight on the inside and loose on the outside. A Tier-1 factory uses automated servo motors and tension sensors to wind the mat with perfect, uniform pressure. If the mat isn’t wound tightly and consistently, it will suffer severe compaction loss during transit and won’t unspool cleanly on your automated cutting tables.
3. Check the Walls for Micro-Climate Control

Fiberglass binders are essentially highly sensitive fine chemicals. Whether it is a powder or an emulsion, the binder reacts aggressively to ambient moisture.
What you are looking for: Digital hygrometers and HVAC systems in raw material storage and curing zones.
The standard: Ask the camera operator to pan up to the walls in the binder storage room. You should see active humidity and temperature monitors. If a factory is located in a humid coastal region and leaves its binder powder sitting in an open, unconditioned warehouse, that powder will absorb moisture and clump. When applied to the glass, it will cure unevenly, resulting in dreaded “white spots” and wet-out failures on your shop floor. 4. Crash the QA Lab (Demand Live Testing)

A spotless, quiet QA laboratory is a massive red flag. It usually means the lab is just a showpiece for visiting clients and isn’t actively monitoring the production line.
What you are looking for: Active equipment and live data, not static spreadsheets.
The standard: Don’t just read their testing policy—ask them to test a sample right in front of you. You want to verify two critical metrics:
Loss on Ignition (LOI) Test: This verifies the exact binder content (usually 4% to 6%). Ask to see the burn-off oven.
Dry Tensile Strength: Watch them put a sample strip into the tensile tester. If the dry strength is too low, the mat will easily tear when your workers pull it across a mold, driving up your scrap rate.
5. Spot the Defect Interception Systems

A stray utility blade, a loose bolt from an overhead walkway, or a clump of hardened resin falling into the mat might seem like a rare accident. But if that contaminated roll makes it into your facility and gets loaded into a closed-mold RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) process, it will permanently gouge and destroy a $200,000 steel mold.
What you are looking for: Automated interception, not tired human eyes.
The standard: Look at the inspection station right before the mat is rolled. Are they relying entirely on a tired operator staring at a fast-moving web of glass? That guarantees a high escape rate for defects.
